Innovations in the Charity/Advisor Partnership: The Compelling Social Capital Connection

The concept of social capital (the distribution of the portion of an individual’s wealth that cannot be kept) has added a new dimension to the estate planning process, and offers a unique bridge for partnerships between charitable planners and professional advisors. Conventional estate planning focuses on strategies that produce the greatest benefit for clients and their heirs. However, it is common that minimal value is placed on the client’s social capital options by the advisory community. A cutting edge approach and better appeal to advisors than “we need the money…” is to engage with them in a conversation about addressing the mutual goal of how their clients/our donors may self-direct social capital and thus meet personalized legacy objectives through the use of charitable gifts.
About the Presenter:
Doug joined Thompson & Associates in 2006. He provides charitable estate planning services for not-for-profits and planning clients, with a primary region of Nebraska, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota. He also serves as Regional Manager, with responsibilities to grow Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and the Dakotas. Doug is also a member of the Thompson & Associates Board of Directors.
Doug began his career in resource development in 1990, and has worked with organizations in a range of fields including the arts, social services, higher education and healthcare. Before joining Thompson & Associates, he served as Interim Chief Development Officer and Director of Capital Appeals/Planned Giving for Alegent Health in Omaha and prior to that as Vice President for Advancement at Augustana College and Vice President for Gift Planning at Nebraska Methodist Hospital Foundation. His favorite Chinese proverb is, “When planning for a year, plant corn. When planning for a decade, plant trees. When planning for life… educate people.”
Doug first earned the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation in 1997. He has been a mentor to many and a speaker on philanthropy and planned giving at local, regional and international conferences. Doug is an active member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and served as President of the Nebraska Chapter - leading the chapter to its first-ever recognition as a Ten Star Award Chapter at the international level. He is a member of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, the Nebraska Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, and the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy. Doug is a Fellow in Charitable Estate Planning from the Institute of Charitable Estate Planning.
A native of Iowa, Doug is a magna cum laude graduate of Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and was president of the college's alumni association. He earned his M.Div. degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota and served as a pastor in both rural and urban congregations from 1984 to 1990.
Doug has been an active Rotarian and a board member for the Wesley House Leadership Academy. He has two adult children and two amazing grandchildren.
